Peaberry, known as Caracolillo in Spanish, is a rare physical trait of the coffee bean. Peaberry beans typically grow on the ends of coffee tree branches and are characterized by their round shape, as opposed to the flat face of a regular bean. An estimated 5% of all coffee beans are of the peaberry type. Cherries containing peaberry types yield only one bean, versus the two-bean yield of a regular cherry. Peaberry beans are slightly smaller and denser than the regular type. Their round shape favors a more even roasting, and their rarity makes them a special and uncommon coffee experience. Those who enjoy peaberry roasts speak of its sweetness, bright acid notes, and complex tastes in the cup.
